9. Why Setting Small Daily Goals Is Important
So let’s say you have already made the same mistake (even if you haven’t, you should still read this chapter because it will also show you how to prevent it). My first advice for you is to stop roaming on language forums and to just look at your own progress, not that of others.
I want you to develop a complete ignorance to the progress other people make in your target language, trust me this is much healthier than the alternative which I described in the last chapter, that will lead to a total burnout.
But now it’s time to do something about this problem, so that it may ever happen to you again. The best way I found to avoid this problem is to start thinking in a smaller scope. Sure, your goal should still be to be fluent in your target language one day.
But don’t focus on getting to that goal as fast as possible. It’ll come, so don’t worry about it. I don’t want you to worry about that right now.
When I started learning my goal was to be fluent as fast as possible. And I would set goals like knowing 25000 new words by the end of the year (which is completely unrealistic). This lead to making some unrealistic plans and learning methods which, as you already know after reading chapter 2, did not work one bit.
And the claims on the internet didn’t make that any better, because then I would set even higher goals for the end of the year, which of course failed as well.
So I started thinking, what’s the problem here? Well, I realized pretty fast that believing all those wild claims on the internet was doing me more harm than good, so I stopped reading them.
But the damage was already done because there was actually nothing easier for me than setting unrealistic goals and being pumped up to achieve them, only to realize that they’re impossible, at least for me.
And that’s when it hit me. I’m thinking in a scope that’s way too big. I always set goals for the whole year, not thinking about the problems that I might face along the way. And the only thing that happened afterwards was that I didn’t achieve them.
One time it was because I was just too exhausted after work. There was no way I could learn 100 new words with that little amount of energy! So I skipped it that day and thought that I would just learn 120 new words for the next few days.
You can probably already guess how that went. Most of the time it took just a few days until I would give up angrily, because nothing worked the way I wanted it too.
That’s also the reason why most New Year’s resolutions fail. Committing to a goal that’s still so far away is just too hard and most of the time you will fail.
So this is what I want you to do from now on: Stop thinking in a big scope.
